STETSON came to stay at the Sheltie Shack at his zero hour in desperation.  He had found a true friend in a kennel helper where he was being kept after being picked up as a stray in a western Nebraska town.  Local rescues or adopters were scared off to help himstepping up to the plate to adopt this sweet, young, big galoot because he needed hip surgery (for a dislocation) that had a price tag of $1000.

His kennel friend, being a long time volunteer, adopter and friend of SSR called and asked for our help trying to find a Rescue that would help him, stating that he was just TOO NICE OF A DOG to be destroyed.  We made a few contacts without any solid commitment except for a donation from C.A.R.E. (Jake's Fund) towards his surgery if we could find a rescue to take him.  With no luck we made a call to our local Vet who is incredibly RESCUE FRIENDLY and he said if we could get him the 8 hrs here, he'd do the surgery at a much more reasonable fee.

SPEED FORWARD A FEW DAYS....

Tuesday (5-22-12) Stetson's buddy met me halfway and back to THE SHACK came STETSON.  Today (5-23-12) he checked in at the Clinic, met Dr. Musil and after an hour and half procedure he is now on his way to recovery.  Later in his recover he still needs to be neutered and have some dangling dew claws removed (we'll check his chompers at that time too...maybe a dental will also be in order, ha).

I've virtually only spent a short 6 + hours with Stetson so far and this big boy has just melted my "sheltified" heart.  Talk about a gentle giant, he's just a love.  I'm so glad we expanded our mini sheltie wings to help this well deserved dog make it on his way to having a long and happy future.

After checking in at the Clinic this morning, before he was ready for his surgery, Stetson and I strolled back outside and sat in the breeze under the trees and I gave him a good brushing out (thank goodness the wind was blowing hard out of the south....the extra dog that came out of him blew back to Nebraska, ha).  I could tell it must have felt GOOD  getting all that itchy OLD hair out, he just smiled all over his bubbly self and rubbed into the soft grass.  I really think had he been able to speak, he'd asked me if he'd died and went to heaven.  I'm sure right now, he's had a second thought about that...with pain meds on board, but hopefully after I bring him back home tomorrow afternoon, he'll be glad to see me come back for him and some much deserved pampering will help ease the pain, too.

SO FOLKS ...STETSON will soon be looking for a BIG DOG LOVING family.  He's not our typical little yapping rescue resident here....so don't overlook him.  Spread the word that Sheltie Shack has this big boy here and that we will also be interviewing qualified families wanting to adopt him.  We'll learn more about his habits, likes, dislikes, etc as days/weeks go on and update our info here. I can guarantee that this is gonna be an easy going, happy go lucky, appreciative and loving boy (with kisses) for anyone interested in opening their heart and home to him.  DON'T INQUIRE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A LIFESTOCK GUARD ANIMAL...this is a LOUNGE ANIMAL (REALLY) ;-) !

If you are not in the market for adopting at this time, you can still help Stetson if you're able to donate a little bit toward his surgeries, which will certainly not all be covered by his adoption fee.   Donations (are tax deductible) may be made through our Pay Pal link (just mark it for Stetson) ,
